Yesterday my freezer, in its infinite wisdom, decided to defrost itself. Well, OK, so it may have taken a day or so, and the reason was that the plug had inadvertently been knocked ever so slightly out of its socket, but it was darned inconvenient nonetheless. Luckily my lodger noticed in time to salvage most of the food.
So there I was with a whole freezer load of chilled food, waiting to be either eaten or binned. Now, I don't know about you, but I just hate to throw good food away. I'm just about coming to terms with not having to finish everything that's on my plate and throwing a few leftovers away, but a freezer full? No way! My first impulse was to just phone friends and family and give it away, but then the social butterfly in me decided that I'd much rather cook it all and share it with folk in various social occasions. Luckily, I was throwing a party on Saturday night, so that took care of a goodly amount. I gave a chicken away to my Dad and Stepmum, but that ruled them out for coming to me for dinner. Next I called my wine and games playing buddies, who have been putting my Aussie friends up whilst they've been over on holiday. I left them a message to not cook dinner, but come round to me instead, bringing the Aussies with them. Unfortunately, they are totally hopeless when it comes to checking messages, so that one didn't work - they were halfway through cooking dinner by the time I got hold of them. My Aussie mate came round to drop my motorcycle back (remember the insurance hell?!), so I enticed him and his fiance (did I mention he proposed on May Day at Waylands Smithy, the romantic?) round for dinner instead. Several helpings of food later, I allowed them to admit defeat and took them back to pack for departure the next day. Yes, the party was in their honour - just a shame they had to leave a few days earlier than I'd thought so would miss it - d'oh! And tonight I've had a few friends round for roast chicken and pork. Oh, and I was booked to take a work colleague out for lunch, so he came here for that too.
So that's at least a chunk of the food taken care of. Tomorrow should take care of most of the rest. And the freezer needed defrosting anyway. Party anyone?
